Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town began as part of the Mayflower Compact in 1620 and was originally called Woburn. It was renamed Leominster after its founder, Sir Edmund Leominster, 1st Baronet (1619-1692), in 1635. The town was first settled by Puritans in 1646 and became an incorporated village in 1711. In 1791 it became a city under the name of Boston and changed back to Leominster upon its incorporation into the United States as a city on April 20, 1847. Leominster is located on Interstate 93 south of Boston and is bordered by Brockton to the west, Wellesley to the east, Newton to the north and Revere to the south. The downtown area has several large shopping malls including Fenway Park which opened in 1903 and has hosted various sports teams since then including baseball (the Red Sox) and hockey (the Bruins). There are also smaller shopping centers scattered throughout town center with unique stores such as Branford’s Camera Store which had a storefront camera that could take pictures from inside your own home until about 1984; Beechwood House which also housed a variety of interesting items such as dolls from around Europe including one that cost $5 million when it was sold; Gilded Cage Theatre where tickets went for up to $250 each before they were discontinued in 2004; Quaker Meetinghouse which served as both an indoor meeting place for worshipers during winter months while also hosting concerts during summer months;Summit whose primary activity until recently has been providing green space adjacent to Fenway Park complete with tennis courts and basketball Courts;and Westport Center which houses most of Leominster’s commercial businesses along with library services across several floors managed by Brown University All these businesses have contributed significantly to making Leominster one ofMassachusetts' most vibrant communities
