In 1895–96 there were several clashes between local black Americans and white Americans over voting rights during the Republican National Convention that took place in Boston; these protests led to World War I-era violence in Leominster which didn't stop until after hostilities ended two years later when all sides resolved their differences diplomatically. In 1772, when Rhode Island became a part of the United States and Leominster became its capital, it decided to remain an agricultural town with a small downtown business district. In 1812, after Maine gained statehood, Leominster annexed land around contemporary Kingston on Thames River. The village grew up around these developments and reached its peak population during World War II because many people worked for the munitions plants located near the town center or for government agencies such as Veterans Affairs or Coast Guard Base Cape Cod (now Danvers). However, by 1970s-1980s most residents had moved away or left the area for suburban communities such as Framingham or Needham. Today much of what once constituted downtown has been demolished and replaced by high-rise condominium towers that line Main Street between Watertown and Somerville; there are also several large parking lots surrounding central square which have been converted into retail spaces including chains like Macy’s and Sears etc., while lower-density housing still remains scattered throughout more recent development nearby including along Revere Avenue east of Main Street (the old course of Ipswich River), near Wellesley College on Route 3A (the former route of Route 99), just beyond Kendall Square shopping mall on Route 118A (formerly called South Plainfield Road) – all within walking distance from each other making it easy to get around without having to leave town Center! Leominster takes its name from two families who were instrumental in its early history: those who founded it in 1624 were named Leman Brothers; during World War II many people worked at munitions plants near town center so they received their surnames too! According to historian Dr.Joanne Kloppenburg writing about her book "The History of Lexington/Fenway Park" published by BB&T Books LLC in 2018: “Lemon Tree Lane leads past what used to be Lemon Tree Tavern where Nathaniel Parker wrote his Declaration Of Independence upon becoming an American citizen; Market Square was developed primarily through financial investments made by Samuel Adams Sr., John Quincy Adams II & others associated with Harvard University; Brown's Brewery operated until 1869 before moving out into dairy production…one can explore various aspects related to early industry development [in Leominster] through numerous museums open both day & evening hours including Brown's Brewery Museum open daily 9am-5pm.;[and] local businesses continue operate today under various names & logos remnants of this period include Lepanto Pizza which openedca1965 inside Kendall Square Shopping Mall [and] Stonington Cheese which opened ca1959 on Wellesley College campus adjacent to Eliot Chapel off High Street."
