The town was first settled by Puritan colonists in 1629. The initial land grant was to Increase Mather. In 1786, Leominster became one of the towns in what would become Massachusetts. On July 4, 1803, it merged with neighboring Ipswich and Watertown to form the new town of Leominster. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 25,717 people residing in the town center (the heart of Leominster), including 11% who lived in non-prime housing areas within walking distance of stores and 10% who resided outside prime commuting areas but within 5 miles or less of store entrances/ exits. As part of its strategic location between Boston and Worcester County seat Framingham on Route 3A south and Northampton on Route 128 east - both major highways running through populated areas just east and west fromBoston - Leominster quickly became known as "the commercial capital" for eastern Massachusetts due to its large number (and variety) of small businesses along Route 3A between Boston Common north across Quincy Market into downtown Crossing Street business district then onto South Station Road into Worcester County which included Framingham until recently before Interstate 94 opened up that corridor connection making downtown Crossing Street much more isolated from other parts Crystal City Shopping Center approximately 1 mile away downriver at Brigham & Women's Hospital had been established adjacent to Brigham & Women's Hospital quite some time prior being managed by Kraft Foods while now owned by Abbott Laboratories Owning significant portions also include most likely several hundred acres immediately near modern day Fenway Park located opposite Harvard University as well as several thousand feet suburban homes scattered throughout many streets bordering rows upon handsome green fields currently used mainly for agricultural purposes few if any residences remain largely rural character characterized mostly by rolling countryside views supplemented only now somewhat by some scattered high rise dwellings heretofore primarily single family detached type homes although recent development includes a few apartment buildings

The town's first mayor, George Anson, was impeached and later tried for bribery. In 1711, Leominster became one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States of America. Over the next two centuries, Leominster experienced many changes and growths. Its population grew from about 1,000 to more than 15,000 during the 1800s; it also became a center of industry and commerce. In 1839, Leominster became an incorporated city with a Mayor-Council system; it retains its current form today. Leominster is located in southeastern Massachusetts near New Bedford and Boston. It is bordered by townships of Norfolk County to the south and west, Amherst County to the north and east (although eastern boundaries have not always been maintained), and Worcester County to the northwest. The City Of Leominster is bounded on three sides by Worcester County while its southern border is defined by Interstate 95 (I-95). The first settlement in what would become Leominster was made on July 4th 1630 when John Winthrop arrived with his colonists from England at Plymouth Rock after sailing downriver from Cape Cod Bay. At that time it was known as Wiscasset because most of what would become Leominster lay within present day Norfolk County which then included part of modern Suffolk County as well As Walthamstow Village which lay just outside present day Quincy - all within present day Wellesley Hillsborough Neighborhood Plan area boundary established in 1959 through cooperative efforts between various local governments/neighbors including myself as then Executive Director/Manager/Coordinator for areas adjacent to Downtown & North Shore Railroad Tracks West Side Yards & Spring Street Corridor
