Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,693 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Essex County and part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Leominster" derives from the Wyandot word "elm". The first Europeans to come to Leominster were Dutch traders from Rotterdam who built a trading post on what is now North Main Street in 1636. English fishermen had also been ashore there before. In 1775, General George Washington set up his headquarters here during his march across New England as part of his campaign for independence from Great Britain. In 1822, Leominster became a town charter with an area of . In 1868 it was merged into the larger city of Boston. On July 4th, 1903, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Leominster while leaving only two blocks standing (the western block still stands). This event is generally considered to be one of the worst fires in Massachusetts history. In 1916-1917 Leominster residents successfully petitioned for and received permission to build a military airfield adjacent to their village which would become known as Midway Field after Midway Airport near Boston which opened in 1917. The airport served as an emergency landing ground for planes used by American forces during World War I and II. After Midway Field closed in 1945 many aviation enthusiasts moved away from Leominsterward towards Framingham because of new airports opening up elsewhere in New England; but some people continue to live and work in rural areas around Midway Field today because no other airport exists within commuting distance for most people living within city limits
