Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,191 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of New Hampshire and Vermont. The first permanent settlers in what is now Leominster came from England in 1630. They named their community after Lord Leominster, an English gentleman who had been knighted for his services to King Charles I during the English Civil War. In 1764, Congress passed the Act for Establishing a School District in Merry Middleton and Leominster with the intent to provide education for Native Americans living on reservations within that district. The act also established Congregational church property east of town as part of what is now Holyoke College Campus. In 1802, Captain John Smith discovered land comprising present-day Leominster when he invaded and burned Mount Pleasant Plantation during the Second Seminole War; this event made Plymouth County, Maine much more inhospitable and led to many early outposts being establish throughout what is now New Hampshire and Vermont. That same year, James Kitchin erected a sawmill on the river between present day North Bridge Road and South Bridge Road in what is now eastern Leominster Township. By 1806, there were six mills operating in this area (the others being located at Derby Center near Manchester and Amherst). The Panic of 1907 caused prices of goods exported from America to soar which resulted in mass unemployment throughout much of Northeast US. Businesses closed their doors all over America including those located right inside Boston's borders including our own milliners’ shop located at 5 Water St., just south of Beacon Hill (now home to Harvard University). Our owners decided it would be best if they took their business elsewhere rather than suffer through bad times together; however many residents chose to stay put anyway because they knew that nothing could change until something did – some things never change! Eventually enough people returned back into town so that by 1910 there were 12 stores open, five churches (Congregationalist/ Baptists only), four schools (grades Pre-K-12th), two newspapers (the Republican Leader & Pioneer Valley News) & one post office servicing everyone within 15 miles radius! Today we still have our small but vibrant downtown district complete with all its historical landmarks like The State House (& former jail) as well as several businesses - yes - even an arcade! And everything looks brand new since we completely reconstructed most of downtown following a severe fire back in 2006!
