The most serious attack on unarmed civilians occurred when a group of white supremacists attacked three black men working as prostitutes near Leominster Race Course during a night raid on November 15, 1889. Five men and one woman were killed; nine more people were injured and some required surgery after being stabbed or slashed with knives or machetes wielded by the assailants while they slept inside the prostitution business premises.
