The name for Leominster comes from the Celtic word leoman meaning "willow tree." The first settler in what is now Leominster was Captain John Winthrop in 1630. The town originally included only the eastern half of what is now Northampton County, but in 1801 it added land to its west side to form what is today Southborough County. On July 24, 1922, it became a city through an act of Congress which merged with Arlington Heights, Illinois. As a result of this merger and because Arlington Heights had been known as Park Ridge before becoming Arlington Heights, Leominster got its nickname "The City on the Hill." Leominster has many landmarks including Holyoke College (a small private university), played by professional teams since 1903; Fenway Park - home of Boston Red Sox baseball since 1903 and also home to two other professional sports teams (the Bruins and Patriots) as well as multiple museums such as Faneuil Hall Marketplace & Museum (a shopping center), Wellesley College and Harvard University fields hockey games each year at nearby rink called TD Garden; and Longfellow House - one of America's oldest surviving brick houses still standing on Tremont Street in downtown Leominster.

Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Massachusetts that make up the Greater Boston metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Boston. Leominster has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries and part of its history can be found inNative American treaties with European settlers. In 1633, English colonists founded what would become Leominster as a trading post on the Great North Road from Kingston to Ipswich. The first white settler arrived in 1768 when John Davenport erected a farmstead on present-day Main Street. A year later, he married Sarah Goodall, daughter of Samuel Goodall and Anna Sitkin. In 1772, Davenport began surveys for an new town site which would include parts of present-day Leominster and West Haverhill. He named his new town "Leominster" after his home county of Louthshire, England. The town's first store was built in 1813 and soon became one of the leading commercial centers in central Massachusetts due to its location near river crossings and its access to grains, timber, potatoes, beef cattle and woolen goods exported downriver by boat or wagon train from New England's textile mills. In 1828–29 efforts were made to create a rail line through Leominster but these were abandoned due to funding difficulties; instead Leominster developed into a center for truck traffic connecting eastern Massachusetts with western New York State via Interstate 90 until it was replaced by Route 128 in 1990s permanent designation as an expressway corridor linking Boston with Albany/New York City via Syracuse etc. One significant event during those early years took place on October 15th 1863 when Confederate General Robert Ewell began his failed attempt tocrossthe North River atpresent-day downtown Leominster using a pontoon bridge over the Raritan River just south of where Main Street now stands; this aborted attack against Federal troops under Ulysses S Grant occurred only minutes before Union forces surrounded Ewell's force at Redbridge Landing on Long Island Sound opposite New Brunswick
