On October 15, 1871, Leominster voted to secede from Plymouth County and become an independent republic called "Lecompton". The name for Lecompton would be used until 1960 when it reverted back to Leominster. Leominster's main economic activity is agriculture with some small businesses also located there. The town has two schools: one public school and one private school which serve students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. There are also a few businesses located here that provide services such as grocery stores or health care clinics for residents; however most residents rely on their homes for all their needs including food and basic medical supplies. There are several attractions located in or near Lecompton that include the local historical society (founded in 1903), three golf courses (one municipal course) and over twenty miles of hiking trails available to visitors throughout the year. In addition to its rich history and cultural attractions, Lecompton offers various outdoor activities such as hunting/fishing opportunities as well as horseback riding and golfing events throughout the year

The first European settlers in Leominster were Englishmen who arrived in 1630 and named it Longmeadow after their previous home in England. The present-day town was established on May 10, 1765 when land belonging to Eleazer Wheelock and others was donated by Increase Mather to become a town. The original courthouse was built on Meetinghouse Hill and later moved to its present location on Main Street in 1837. The old school building still stands today as the Leominster Historical Society Museum. In 1865, Leominster became one of the towns that formed Worcester County; this event marked an important Turning Point for the community as it saw rapid growth during its early years. Over time, Leominster has continued to grow and develop with many new businesses arriving including several large shopping malls which have been built over time including Westgate Mall (opened in 1989), Northampton Mall (opened in 2001), and Central Square (opened in 2006). In recent years, Leominster has seen further growth with several apartment developments completed such as Riverwalk Place (opened in 2013) and Meadow Brook Village (opened in 2016).
