Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,910 at the 2000 census. It is the second-smallest incorporated town in Massachusetts and has the smallest population by ZIP code (71974). Leominster is also one of only two towns in Massachusetts that are not served by a post office. The first settlers to Leominster were farmers who arrived from Connecticut in 1634. The town was chartered on March 11, 1643, by a group of men from Plymouth Colony who were looking for land to start a new colony. The first courthouse was built in 1701 on Center Street. In 1824, Leominster became part of the newly formed Middlesex County and ceased to be an independent municipality. In 1898, Leland Stanford Sr., founder of Stanford University, donated land near what is now downtown Leominster for an agricultural college which he named "Stanford University College". On October 15, 1902, the college moved from its original location to present-day Parkside Drive. In 1934–35, Leominster participated in New England's experiment with municipal government through enactment of the Town Meeting Act which provided for village form of government within towns with populations over 1,000 people votes out of three members each and no more than 2% representation from outside municipalities in any single year; this system remained in effect until 2002 when it was replaced by town meeting democracy within cities and towns with populations over 20 thousand residents vote out 3 trustees each instead of 3 members as under the Town Meeting Act 1934–35 On November 6th 1922 Boston Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth made his debut against the Leominster Tigers at Swampscott Park; he hit a home run off Tigers reliever Jocko Heifetz leading off the 9th inning giving Boston their first ever victory over an opponent other than Philadelphia Phillies (the Red Sox would win every other game played against Tigers during that season). On May 25th 1923 Red Sox pitcher Joe DiMaggio set an American League record with 4 hits against Fordham Panthers; DiMaggio would go on to break that record later that year while playing for New York Yankees . On December 12th 1916 Major General John J Pershing dedicated Belleair Cemetery located adjacent to First Congregational Church just east of Main Street; Belleair Cemetery would eventually become one of America's largest – holding more than 2 million interments including influential Americans such as Ulysses S Grant and Woodrow Wilson . Leominster had been mentioned as a possible site for America's first airport before Congress passed House Resolution 513 on July 8th 1913 calling for “A permanent airfield or landing field” near Boston’s then-outlying districts like Amherstport and Easthampton; however there was no definitive plan developed until 1917 when Congressman James Meeks suggested that flying boats could be used to supply gas needed for military purposes at Logan Airport located adjacent to Belleair Cemetery – this proposal led toAmerica’s first commercial airline being established! On January 26th 1918 Secretary George Washington announced plans for passenger service between New York City and Washington D.C.; this service would eventually become known as Amtrak .
