On November 5th 1851 voters approved incorporation as a city by ordinance and on December 15th general election were held for mayor and Common Council members which resulted in the installation of James Fenton as Mayor with Aldermen Edward Everett Hale (2nd) and Isaac Parker 2nd serving on councilmember spot; Harvey Morse (1st) being appointed Clerk/Treasurer effective January 1st 1852 On January 1st 1853 streets were re-named after native son patriots such as George Washington (Providence Road), Ethan Allen (Allen Street), Jonathan Edwards (Edwards Avenue), Daniel Webster (Webster Avenue), John Adams (Adams Boulevard). The original courthouse burned down on July 12th 1857 but replaced soon afterwards with another building designed by architect Augustus Saint-Gaudens which still stands today on High Street near Indian Head Park. There are also several churches located throughout Leominster including First Congregational Church predating British settlement by over 500 years; Christ Episcopal Church built around 1700; Stowe Methodist Episcopal Zion Church founded 1865; First Baptist church built 1888; second Baptist church built 1912 There are also several businesses located within the town including Wetherbee Mercantile Company founded in 1798 by Captain Wetherbee – later renamed Wetherbee & Tunstall Merchants Co., Phelps Dodge Express Company started 1865 - two gas stations opened circa 1917 - The Ames Manufacturing Company began making vacuum cleaners circa 1919 - Downey's Department Store opened 1935 - finally Sears Hardware store opened 1950 . Many residents continue to commute into Boston daily via bus or train . However some residents have established themselves within Leominster own community such as David Appelbaum running his own engineering company since 1978 called Appelbaum Engineers Incorporated . Additionally many small businesses have sprung up alongside main thoroughfares like West Main Street which has become home to numerous small grocery stores , dry goods stores etc., making it one of most vibrant communities outside Greater Boston
