Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 19,859 at the 2010 census and 24,844 at the 2015 census. The town is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first successful European settlement in what is now Leominster was made by John Winthrop in 1630 as part of a larger effort to found new English colonies in North America. Winthrop's settlement failed due to disease and hostile natives but it helped spur further exploration and development of the region. In 1717, Samuel Adams set up shop in what is now downtown Leominster after being granted a land grant from King George II for his efforts to promote farming in the New England regions.Adams became an important figure in early American politics and served as president of the United States from 1797-1800 under two presidents who were also from Leominster: George Washington and James K. Polk In 1836, General Nathaniel Banks decided to take over control of Fort Warren near Whatcom village (now Everett) on Cape Cod because President Andrew Jackson had ordered him not to do so following reports that British forces were operating there illegally. After successfully repelling a combined force of Native Americans and Canadian militia led by Chief Joseph Meeker, Banks turned his attention northward towards Boston where he discovered valuable salt water fishing grounds off the coast between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island which he proceeded to explore. He developed plans for an expanded harbor at Quincy which would have opened up new economic opportunities for Leominster residents but construction did not begin until after his death in 1852 due to financial problems caused by overpopulation rather than any lack of interest on behalf of Bostonians seekingprofits from expanding their city limits).
