Leominster was first settled by English colonists in 1636. The village of Leominster became an incorporated town on November 12, 1812. In 1881, it amalgamated with the neighboring towns of Wellesley and Westford to form the present-day municipality of Leominster. The name "Leominster" is thought to be derived from the Celtic word "Lemur", meaning "a large animal". One theory suggests that the spelling may have been inspired by a local meadow called Lemury which had been long used for pasture and later as a market place. Settlers throughout much of New England were familiar with this location because it lay on a trade route connecting Boston with Rhode Island and other colonies in New England. The history of Leominster dates back to 1636 when English colonists settled here as part of what would become Plymouth County. At first, these settlers were Virginians who had fled religious persecution in Virginia en route to North America; many came through lemurs (elk) grazing land granted them by Massachuset Colony governor John Winthrop during his voyage across Narragansett Bay in 1629/30). By early 17th century, however, English farmers had built small villages around established farmssteads along Route 9A leading intoMassachusetts fromNew England via Worcester County (then part of Dudley Parish)). These early settlements served as agricultural communities where people raised cattle and corn; some also engaged in manufacturing such as soapmaking or shoe making from local materials like waxes and feathers taken from game animals killed nearby). Aftermath left many families stranded overnight near Foxborough while their belongings were delivered back home; they eventually relocated eastward along Route 9A where they began anew among friends and family already living thereabouts Leominster developed slowly until 1881 when it merged with three adjacent towns - Wellesley, Westford & Chelmsford - forming what is today known as Leominster Township 1st District.(Wellesley 2nd District.,Westford 3rd District.,Chelmsford 1st District.) On February 14th 1902 an act was passed providing for township organization within Plymouth County following a report from Select Committee on Towns formed pursuant to General Laws Anno LXXXVII chaptered March 15th 1892.) resulting in township status for all but three residents within unincorporated areas now comprising Wellesley Township 3rdDistrict., Chelmsord Township 1stDistrict.,and Westford Township 2ndDistrict.). On July 25th 1935 another act incorporating new townships within Plymouth County authorized establishment by Decatur Square between Southbridge Center eastward to Watertown Square northward thence easterly unto Meeting House Street then northerly northeasterly along Meeting House Street southwesterly thereto continuing easterly thence SOUTHWESTLY TO WATERSTOWN SQUARE which meets said square at its westernmost point.. On October 5th 1938 another act creating twenty-six new townships within PlymouthCounty authorized establishment by Southbridge Center between Watertown Square eastward unto Charlestown Avenue southwesterly thence easterly thereto northwestwards toward Easton Avenue then northerly northeasterly along Easton Avenue southwesterley thereto continuing easterlly thence SOUTHWESTLY TO WATERSTOWN SQUARE which meets said square at its westernmost point.. In 1941 Leominsters inhabitants helped suppress an attempt by Japanese nationals living abroad to open a Japanese cultural center here without proper documentation or prior notice.... On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks occurred located just outside town limits... ensuing response included increased security measures including restrictions on entering & exiting town limits..... Today, over 10 years after 911 events took place,...
