Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, located in the North Shore of Boston. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Somerville-Middlesex-West Roxbury area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630, and incorporated as a village in 1635. In 1774, it became a town after being chosen by Massachusetts General Court as one of three towns on the newly created Providence Plantation (later Quincy). On July 1, 1872, Leominster became an unincorporated part of Boston. Leominster is named for Sir John Leominster (1584–1629), 2nd Baronet (died February 12, 1675), who served as Governor of New England from 1628 to 1631 and from 1635 to 1638. He had been born at Lowestoft, Suffolk County, England and came to America with his father in about 1595. At age 21 he married Mary Davenport (cited below) and began his career as a surveyor general under John Winthrop at Ipswich before moving to Boston where he became deputy sheriff of Suffolk County in 1600 and mayoralty candidate for Boston in 161 5; but he lost both elections because he did not have enough votes cast against him. In 1774 the General Court voted to annex Leominster with Framingham because they felt that it would be more economical to do so than have two separate towns apiece serving different areas withinBoston limits. As part of this annexation decision much effort was put into developing what would become the downtown core which included building many commercial buildings now visible throughoutthe city center including The Globe Newspaper Building on State Street which still stands today
