Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,823 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Leominster County. The name originated from the Old English word leoman meaning "a manorial farm." The first settler in what is now Leominster was John Winthrop and his family in 1636. In 1640, Samuel Winship built a small cabin on what would become Winship Street. In 1846, Rev. David Lloyd founded the First Baptist Church in Leominster and it remains one of the largest churches in Leominster today. In 1862, General George McClellan's army passed through Leominster on their way to fight against Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg Cemetery. This event helped start the Great Migration of Americans that continues to this day and has led to many new residents moving into Leominster over the years. In 1872, Charles Fenton began developing land around present-day downtown for sale to farmers and ranchers; this area became known as Fentonville after him. Today, much of this land still belongs to Fentonville developers or is used for other purposes such as housing and businesses. One notable structure that exists throughout all these years is Hennepin Hall which opened in 1907 as part of a large development called blocks south of Main Street called “the North Side” which housed factories and other commercial buildings until 1966 when they were replaced by shopping centers anchored by Sears & Roebuck stores (now Macy’s). OneLeominster resident who has achieved national attention is Edwin Meese II who served as President Ronald Reagan's Vice President from 1981-1985 while also running for Congress twice during that time period- once representing California's 44th congressional district (which included parts of Leominster) and again being elected Majority Whip under then Speaker Tip O'Neill before becoming Speaker himself after O'Neill resigned due to term limits set forth by then President Jimmy Carter-.
Leominster was founded in 1630 by Puritans who moved from Connecticut. The town became a part of Massachusetts in 1777 and grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War. Leominster is home to the Leominster Historical Society, which preserves and promotes local history.
