Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 46,257 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Leominster was chartered on November 12, 1653 as an agricultural community on the borders of what are now Worcester and Leicester counties. In 1881 it became a city. In 1892 it merged with the neighboring towns of Woburn and Northboro to form what is now called Leominster-Woburn Urban District. The town is named for Ralph Leominster (1608-1672), an Englishman who came to America in 1630 and pioneered agriculture hereabouts. He gave his name to one of the first churches in Leominster; also that year there were two other settlements here: Southborough and Westborough. In 1667 he founded another colony in Plymouth Colony: Hingham. By 1673 there were twenty-four British colonists living in Leominster; by 1740 there were over one hundred settlers hereabouts. Ralph's grandson John had six children born in America—three sons and three daughters—and all but one went westward into settlement during his lifetime (the daughter married a man from Acton). Of these six children, four—John Cotton, Samuel Adams, Abigail Williams (alias Nabby), and Judith Beale—grew up their business men or farmers; while James Cotton became famous as an early American economist
