By 1911, the company had produced more than 1 million instruments including microscopes, telescopes, binoculars, and radar receivers. During World War II, Newton Optics Corporation produced millions of military-grade optics including night vision goggles and airborne radar systems. After the war ended in 1945, Newton Optics Corporation continued production of microscopes until 1997 when it merged with other companies in what is now known as Swarovski Instruments Incorporated (SII). The primary economic activity now located in or around Lawrence is arts and culture: it is home to both Jay Pritzker Pavilion—the world's largest performing arts complex by seating—and WGBH Media Arts Center which houses television and radio stations from all over eastern Massachusetts as well as many art galleries and museums including some of America's most famous collections like the New England Aquarium and Harvard University Art Museum.
