Lawrence was first settled in 1636 by Puritan refugees from England who had fled to America after their ship "King George" wasbmasted off London during King Charles I's war with Spain. They named their new settlement "Boston". In 1772, when Boston became a city under English jurisdiction, Lawrence merged with it to form what is now Worcester County. A number of important people were born or died in or near Lawrence during its early years including John Adams (1735–1801), George Washington Carver (1871–1947), and carrier pigeons Alfred Vail Jr.

Lawrence is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,412 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Newton-Framingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lawrence was first settled in 1769 by John Lawrence and his wife Mary Quincy. The town was named for General George Washington. Lawrence acquired its current name from its founder, Lawrence J. Arbuckle Sr., who made a fortune as a dry goods merchant and real estate developer in the early 20th century. The first store on Main Street opened in 1851 and was operated by James Fenton and his brother Amos Fenton. In 1857, the first post office opened at Lawrenceburg (now North Cohasset). The original school building on what is now Chestnut Street was built in 1856 and served until 1906 when it burned down. A new school building was erected on Park Avenue between First and Second Streets in 1912 which served as the town's public library until it closed in 1969 due to budget cuts. In 1916, Lawrence became one of thirteen towns within the newly organized Commonwealth of Massachusetts to become a city after being granted an Charter by Governor Atherton Harriman In 1958, when Worcester County merged with Hampshire County to form Middlesex County, Lawrence lost all but 1/8 of its incorporated area - including its own downtown business district - to Middlesex County's more populous neighbor across Route 128 (then called Interstate 95)%. The growth of nearby Framingham allowed for some truncation of streets among various businesses near downtown; most notably Center Street between Harrison Ave./Route 128 (later York Rd.) and State St./I-95/Route 128 became Arlington St./Arlington Ave.; Market Street between Central Ave./Route 128 (later Southgate Rd.) and I-95/Route 128 became Atlantic Ave.; Huntington Ave./Harrison Ave./I-95 split off into their own roadway designation as Huntington Way NE before coming back together again as Arlington St/Arlington Ave.--a pattern that continues to this day with most business areas around downtown treated collectively under one name or another since then! There have been several attempts over time to re-establish downtown business districts; however none have ever materialized adequately enough to warrant further study or actual implementation--likely because there simply isn't enough undeveloped land surrounding downtown for such an effort! Some retail redevelopment has taken place along Harrison avenues northward from Downtown onto adjacent residential areas formerly used for farming or manufacturing operations; however these developments tend towards small scale instead of comprehensive renovation or redevelopment like those seen around main streets south of main drag during past decades! Mayor Walsh cited this lacklustre trend following recent reconstruction efforts prior to taking office as one reason behind why he decided not pursue any additional such projects during his term! Today much of what once constituted downtown has been replaced by large suburban tracts housing many high rise buildings providing limited pedestrian access while also stranding some existing urban residents away from their longtime homes which they may never be able’to reclaim... While there are pockets still remaining where people live closeby despite difficult living conditions these days due mainly to commuting difficulties generated by Interstate 95 access points located just outside town limits... [Downtown] remains largely inaccessible save for rare special events or outdoor concertsarsity league games etc., while much valuable infrastructure has been removed making life difficult even for relatively privileged newcomers like myself who can only dream about owning a piece of history like that!
Lawrence was founded in 1638 by Puritans following the revocation of their charter by King Charles I. The town developed as a trading center, and served as the capital of Massachusetts from 1641 to 1785. It became a state capital in 1846.
