Lawrence was settled in 1636 by Puritans. The town was named for General John Lawrence, who fought in the Indian War of 1675-1676. Lawrence grew rapidly, and by 1785 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1812, Lawrence became the capital of Massachusetts.
