Lawrence is home to the University of Massachusetts at Lawrence (UML). The history of Lawrence begins with Increase Mather who founded the town in 1692 after traveling through New England looking for a new place to live. He named his new community after himself because he felt that this would be an ideal place to live due to its close proximity to other towns and its rich culture and history which he saw as superior to any other region in America. From this point on, Lawrence grew rapidly as more people moved into the area and began building homes or starting businesses. By 1800, there were over 200 residents living in Lawrence alone! In 1818, when Lawrence seceded from Worcester County and formed its own municipality under the name of "Lancaster," it did so with the hope of achieving greater autonomy within their county government than had ever been granted before. This decision proved correct as Lancaster successfully pushed for increased funding for local infrastructure and services while also working towards creating a more equal society with respect to race and gender. After six years of struggle, Lancaster finally achieved their goal when they merged with neighboring Middlesex County in 1902! Today, lawrence remains one of the most vibrant communities in Worcester County thanks both to its unique cultural experiences as well as its strong economic foundation which includes several prominent companies such as Red Lobster seafood restaurants and Merrick Paperfield Inc., both located within walking distance of each other on Main Street near UML campus. There are also numerous smaller businesses located throughout downtown including two cinemas (one Regal Cinemas & One screen), three hair salons/spas/massages/day spas/, four bars/nightlife establishments including two brewpubs/, five fast food restaurants/, ten convenience stores/, twelve retail shops/, thirteen major arterial roads crossing through town center (), fifteen churches/mosques etc., two golf courses (), twelve tennis courts (), nine swimming pools () – all without forgetting those pesky pets (). With such a wealth OF activity taking place within easy reach (and often witnessed firsthand!), it’s no wonder that locals love living here despite some occasional challenges like high taxes (+$2 per $1) or unpredictable weather patterns (-€3 nightly on average during winter!).
