Lawrence, Massachusetts was founded in 1764 by Increase Mather and became a town in 1802. The town’s first settler was Capt. John Winthrop, who arrived in 1630. Lawrence is named after the then-British colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, which had been settled by Puritans in 1636. In 1764, Mather and his wife Hannah moved from Boston to what is now Lawrence and joined him there soon afterwards. The couple started a small grocery business before moving into real estate in the late 1700s. In 1802, they bought the present day Palmer House on Beacon Hill for $5,000. They named their home after one of their two children: Revd. Isaac Palmer (1753-1827). Because of its location on Beacon Hill – nestled between Harvard University and Trinity Church – the Palmer House quickly became known as one of the most prestigious addresses in Boston. From here, Mather helped found both Harvard College (1795) and the American Antiquarian Society (1815). He also played an important role in setting up Massachusetts’ early education system; he served as President of Brown University from 1800 to 1825 and was a trustee of that institution from 1798 to 1828. After his death, his library at Brown became one of America’s largest private repositories of books/ manuscripts/papers/.Mather's son Increase Mather III took over leadership of both institutions upon his father's death until 1830 when he went into retirement due to poor health; this left Increase's widow Hannah Montague with overall charge for both colleges until her death in 1840 aged 96 years old! Reverend Isaac Palmer continued living at home until his own death within 3 years - making him only 4th generation descendant after John Winthrop II & Bride Abigail Maverick*! The history & culture associated with Lawrence are vast & complex; it has seen significant periods of prosperity (& adversity), growth (& shrinkage), social change (& continuity), technological advancement (& stagnation) as well as many famous people including abolitionists Samuel Morse Sr., Elijah Woods Jr., Zebulon Pike & David Rives etc.; all whilst remaining largely unaffected by outside influences! Many aspectsof local life have been preserved such as traditional agriculture practices (eg maize agriculture); while others have changed such as residential zoning laws which have led to more density along streetscapes but less privacy during daylight hours 😕
