The history of Lawrence begins with Captain James Bowdoin who settled there circa 1635AD and named it after his friend Lord Dartmouth who had born in Plymouth Colony some years earlier than he did. He may have been looking for a place where he could set up shop when he discovered that there were no navigable waters between New England and Canada so he decided to move his people inland instead Inland from what would become Boston were two small settlements: North Reading (now Westboro) about 10 miles NW of present day Lawrence on the Mystic River near modern day Fallston; South Reading (now Eastboro) about 12 miles SE of present day Lawrence on tidal marshes near modern day Quincy; both villages served as ferry stops until larger towns began to be founded around them like Arlington (later Somerville), Watertown (later Charlestown), Salem (later Worcester). After much back-and-forth argument among various English representatives including Colonel John Winthrop who represented Plymouth Colony at Westminster Abbey during King George II's rule over Great Britain - one reason given for this conflict was that Winthrop felt that these new settlements were not following English law which applied only to Plymouth colonists - finally upon WINTHROP'S death in 1692 AD Southwark Council appointed Major Thomas Weston who surveyed all these lands eastward from Boston Common under licence from Deputy Governor Sir Edmund Andros - this survey formed what is now called the boundary line between Harvard College land then owned by Cambridge University on one side and current day Worcester County ownership across Narragansett Bay on the other side today marking what is now known as "the Weston Line". Once again this line conforms closely to today's Route 128 traffic corridor running concurrently through both towns without actually intersecting each other however duelling streets claim significant portions of both villages today including Northbridge Road running via North Reading Center into Northboro while also providing access to local bars/restaurants located just beyond Interstate 95 exit 5A off I-95 southbound near Wareham center The settlement began expanding rapidly due largely to three factors: 1) intermittent flooding which caused periodic mudslides that allowed settlers easy access to water supplies; 2) convenient transportation available along two major waterways not too far away from where they lived; 3) opportunities for trade with neighboring communities along Route 128
