Lawrence,Massachusetts is a city in and the county seat of Essex County, Massachusetts. The population was 501,527 as of the 2010 census. The largest incorporated community in Lawrence is Lawrenceburgh with a population of 107,821. Lawrence also contains the entire municipality of Southwick-on-Hudson, which had a population of 31,817 at the 2000 census. The town grew up around an area now occupied by downtown Lawrence and its two sister towns: North Holland and Southwick-on-Hudson. The first settlers were Quakers who built their homes along the southern border of what is now east Hartford Township on land that they donated to the town in 1797. There are several surviving buildings from this early period including Meeting House #2 (built 1802), Pioneer Hall (1810), Schoolhouse (1812), and Jail (1815). Lawrence's growth began slowly but steadily over time. It was not until 1824 that it became an organized township with a voting body and civil government separate from that of neighboring Hartford Township. In 1835, when western Middlesex County was created from parts of Connecticut and New York originally part of what was then Westchester County, Lawrence became one of its four townships within that new county. During World War II much activity took place in nearby Manchester where more than 20 percent of all Americans manufacturing goods for military use came from between 1942 and 1945; however, little or no product reached Lawrence munitions plants located in eastern Vermont or western Massachusetts due to transportation difficulties across hills covered in forested terrain. As Robert Haddon points out in his book "The History Of Southwick On Hudson", "Lawrence had always been interested both economically and militarily in those areas lying westward beyond her borders." With the onset of war she militarized her economy by establishing industries such as aviation production facilities at Manchester Airport and beginning purchasesof weapons equipment from abroad which would be delivered via rail to Springfield Junction Railroad Station before being trucked into town for assembly inside local factories

Lawrence, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Lawrence was originally named for Colonel John Lawrence and his wife Sarah Dunham (born 1742 in Norwich, Connecticut). The town's first settlement took place on the site of what is now the central business district of Lawrence. When the railroad came through in 1847, settlers built railroads stations all over the new county seat of Worcester; but only Lawrence had a station on the Pawtucket Railroad. In 1850, when Worcester became a city and its first mayor was elected, Rev. Samuel Adams moved to what is now downtown Lawrence with his family and began to build a Methodist church there which he called "New Zion." In 1851-52 Judge Edward Everett Hale bought land near present day North Street and Walnut Avenue for $2 million dollars and began to build an imposing Mediterranean Revival mansion known as "Hale House", which still stands today. In 1857-58 Reverend Amos donated $10 per acre towards building a permanent park that would include mills Village Green now occupies; this donation helped make Lawrence one of America's earliest townships (it remains one of only two townships in Massachusetts without any incorporated village). Because Hale House sat atop valuable farmland south of town line it was not until after his death that work began on developing it into what is now Park Row Shopping Center & Convention Center complex across from State House – home to many local businesses including The Daily News printing plant founded by Cyrus Harding Ames in 1865 & later acquired by Hearst Corporation (& other current businesses). By 1870-71 most residents had left or were forced out when prices for farm land skyrocketed because of growing industrialism around Pawtucket & New Britain; but some relocated back toLawrence due to its proximity to good schools & jobs opportunities in nearby cities like Boston (& Lowell), as well as easy access to major highways. One enterprising resident named George Washington White developed an expansive garden behind Dogpatch Hall located between Main Street & Eliot Ave., becoming one of America’s leading landscape architects during this period; White also designed much of today’s University Square which fronts Agricultural Hall on Eliot Ave., home to many public buildings such as City Hall since 1907. After several years during which few new people moved into town because Winchester lay outside its bounds (& even though Winchester boasted better schools than Lawrence), things changed with construction of Interstate 91 in 1990 connecting Pawtucket with Boston via Springfield/North Attleboro - creating more opportunity for people living& working close by either within or outsidelawrence altogether: within 2 decades Lawrencespoof had nearly tripled its population from 925 residents counted at 2000 census (@ 2010 census) while neighboringWinchester’s population plummeted from 3200 inhabitants (2000)to below 1000 persons (@2010 census)!
