The Lawrence Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1892. It is the oldest rifle and pistol club in the state of Massachusetts. The group has been meeting monthly since then, typically at a nearby park or other public place. The Lawrence Rifle and Pistol Club was founded to promote shooting sports and protect private property from unauthorized use. In addition to its annual NRA Meeting, which is held at the beginning of the month, LRPC meets on various other occasions to discuss club activities, shoot new rifles or pistols, or just socialize with fellow shooters. In 1916, the LRPC became an affiliate organization of the American Association for Shooting Sports (AAAS). This affiliation allowed LRPC members access to many resources offered by AAAS members including firearms instructor training programs and magazine subscription services. Today, LRPC continues to provide these benefits as part of its core mission statement: “to maintain a safe environment for all who participate in our sport by practicing marksmanship under responsible conditions”

The following year, Lawrence became the capital of Massachusetts when Boston was moved to its current location.
