Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. The population was 11,639 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Haverhill were three brothers who came overland from Rhode Island in 1624 and named their new trading post "Haverhill." The town sprang up around them, and they eventually sold the land to the government for $2 per acre (0.075 square mile). In 1795, when Haverhill became a city, it adopted a charter that declared its purpose as "the promotion of happiness and mutual improvement within its limits." In 1825, Rev. Ebenezer Mudge organized an Episcopalian church here and built his original brick building on Meeting Street. A year later he married Sarah Morehouse and moved into this building with her. Reverend Mudge served as pastor here until his death in 1876. His wife then took on the role of pastor until her death in 1901. Then Revolver Wm. Tilton filled that role for many years before becoming rector from 1916-1934; during which time he also developed Haverhill's first high school (now known as Simmons College), founded two hospitals (one for children and one for adults), opened several stores, erected many churches and schools including St John's Episcopal Church (1897) and First Baptist Church (1927). After 1934 there was only one priest serving both churches until 1948 when Father James Walsh arrived to take over services at First Baptist Church which merged with Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish to form Holy Cross Parish in 1951-52 followed by Our Lady of Mount Carmel again becoming Holy Cross Parish from 1956-1960; finally Father Gerard Janssens took over services here from 1960-1964 after which all services were under the direction of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Worcester who renamed it Holy Cross Parish Haverill diocese in 1966 upon its incorporation into that jurisdiction.- From 1825-1966: Reverend Ebenezer Mudge, Mrs Sarah Morehouse

Haverhill is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA metropolitan area. The town's first settler was John Winthrop who arrived in 1630 and built the first house on the present day Main Street. In 1812 Haverhill had a population of 3,000 people and by 1840 it had increased to 11,500 people. The largest Increase in population took place during World War II when Haverhill reached its peak with more than 20% of its residents serving in the Armed Forces. Haverhill was originally known as Wethersfield because it lay on the border of both Dartmouth and New Hampshire (Wethersfield lies just south of Nashua). After Wethersfield became a separate town in 1792 some citizens decided that they would name their new town after an early settler named Haverhill who had come to this area about 1630. When this request for naming rights was denied by Dartmouth authorities they changed their minds and adopted the name for their new community which became effective July 1st, 1792."
