The first European to set foot in what is now Haverhill was Capt. John Smith in 1623. He named it after his friend and mentor, Reverend William Carteret who had settled in England a few years earlier. The first permanent settler in Haverhill was Nicholas Mansfield who arrived from Ipswich, Suffolk with his family on October 17th,1636.
