Haverhill is a town in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, located on the eastern bank of the river Mystic. The population was 5,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of Plymouth County. The first mention of Haverhill comes from an Indian document dating back to 1632 which names "Havery-hill" as one of several towns in Plymouth Colony that were to be taxed with goods exported from England. In 1646, when Plymouth's charter was revoked and its residents were deported, some of them returned to Haverhill and began anew life there. At this time, Havery-hill had about 100 people living there and it continued to grow through immigration over the next few hundred years until reaching its current size. Haverhill was originally called Wappingerstown after two men who settled there in 1629: William Wappinger and John Wanton. In 1768, while still part of Plymouth County, Haverhill became separated from Plympton when that county formed a new district named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln called Northampton District. The split again happened when Northampton District was disbanded in 1771 and reorganized as Cumberland District; however, due to its larger population (nearly 10,000), Haverill remained within Cumberland District until 1803 when it finally became part of Plymouth County under the new government system implemented by James Ketchum during his short governorship (1802-04). During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned at Featherston Barracks here in 1941 before being transported acrossstate to Minot AFB near Bismarck ND where they perished in 1945 together with those housed at Topeka POW camps throughout much of 1947 before their liberation by American forces on May 8th - just days after Japan's surrender! hvh/s

Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, located on the South Shore of Cape Cod. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Newton-Cambridge Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Haverhill was Nicholas Goodspeed and his wife Elizabeth White in 1636. The first church in Haverhill was built by Rev. John Eliot and dedicated on December 17th, 1641. In 1802, the town charter was granted to Isaac Stevens and it remains his name to this day. In 1807, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line between New England andBoston which became known as "Morse's Line". At that time there were only two roads in Haverhill - Meeting Street which connected Downtown with North End (then called Watertown), and Indian clay Road which connected Easton with Westborough Square (later Harvard Square). The townsfolk voted to incorporate as a city on November 14th, 1827 but due to lack of funds it never happened. After incorporation as a city it prospered thanks to its location along Route 128 – one of the main thoroughfares then linking Boston with other major cities across America – and its access to education opportunities both public and private through Emerson College and Dartmouth College. However over time downtown Haverill lost some of its business vitality while much growth took place around Route 128; eventually downtown Plaza Square would become home to many high-end businesses because it offered better connectivity between all parts of town than did Main Street back when IRLH had more restaurants/bars/stores etcetera within walking distance for everyone
Haverhill is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,609 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Salem Village until 1834 and then Haverhill Township. The first Anglo-Saxon settler in Haverhill was John Alden who located there in 1636.
