Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester-Fall River Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Haverhill were Portuguese traders in 1624 and 1625. In 1628, Samuel Eliot Morison wrote about "Haverhill" in his book "The History of American People". A year later, John Winthrop founded the Mayflower Compact on Haverhill Common. In 1737, Captain John Smith sailed up the Mahican River and discovered what would become Haverhill when he landed on its estuary on November 14th. The town was chartered as a village by General James Sullivan on February 3rd, 1738. On July 4th of that year (the date now recognized as Patriot's Day), Jonathan Edwards preached his famous sermon "A Warning to All Mankind". At this time there were only 10 houses in the town and just three people lived there fulltime: two teachers and one inn keeper. The first store was built at Northampton Street and Market Street in 1739 by Timothy Pickering (one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence). There was also a blacksmith shop located near where Main Street now meets South street from about this time until 1820 when it burned down due to an arsonist(s). Captain John Smith's landing led to increased activity along Haverhill's riverfront which included construction of wharves for shipping goods upriver from Stockbridge Harbor on Pulaski Point opposite present day Fall River; development around Old Mill Pond with associated buildings such as a gristmill; growth along Northampton Street from which most families took their grocery shopping; several brick homes built circa 1800 including those known as “Plymouth Plantation Houses”; land purchases (now part of Fall River) beginning around 1800 by Rev. Benjamin Hallowell who named it Swampscott after himself south side of river near modern day President Obama Boulevard/Old Town Hall Road intersection; numerous religious services held at various locations including First Baptist Church which still stands today across from State House; many potters working out of their homes starting about 1800 using water power available at sites like Northampton St., Pembroke Rd., then South Well Road... These activities had far-reaching consequences for both local economy and social interaction within what is now known as downtown core since distance limitation prevented residents or merchants from coming together for general business purposes.. By 1830 there were over 100 residents living Downtown with taverns/bars being established all over main streets served by canalboats taking sailors' beer downriver to Portsmouth or Boston . The area became known as “Downtown” because commercial ventures pushed away swampy areas surrounding main streets making way for new housing developments anchored by large churches and foundries dating back to early 19th century.. Another result was rapid gentrification with many original inhabitants losing access to important resources requiring themto leave downtown including education opportunities becoming limited especially for less advantaged groups although some managed to find new residencies elsewhere.. Slavery ended following British evacuation during Revolution while slavery in Massachusetts continued until 1833 under state law without presidential proclamation though Freedmen's Bureau existed parallel system until 1865...As late as 1910 most citizens identified themselves simply as “People Of Haverhill” rather than “Residents Of Plymouth County”...Today much evidence remains documenting aspectsof early history suchvoices remain heard throughout center city giving riseto misconceptions about current community…

Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. The center of Haverhill is home to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and many small businesses. The town's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town was first settled in 1736 by Wm. Bradford and his wife Annabelle Purchase from Ipswich, MA. They named their new settlement Haverhill after the heights in Hampshire County where they resided until 1741 when they moved to Amesbury because of Indian hostilities there. In 1746 Wm., Jr., founded a sawmill on the river near present dayLowell Street and Main Street; it continued operation until 1824. In 1768, John Winthrop came to Haverhill with his family and began building Meeting House #2 (now part of USU) on Meetinghouse Lane which still stands today as one of the most significant early buildings in Haverhill. He also built a millrace that flows through downtown now known as Winthrop Road which served both his farmstead and later village growth for many years prior to being drained in 1922-23 as part of Queensbridge Park development project led by Mayor James Fenton Winthrop also donated land for what is now Amherst College's west campus which opened in 1831 Haverhill experienced its earliest industrial activity during the 19th century when several local companies manufactured goods such as textiles and shoes; however these activities soon faded away due to technological advancements such as machine tool production starting up around 1870s that made products more efficient than hand-made items In 1872 Drury Bros.' grocery store was built across from USU making it one of only a few stores open during this time period along Route 2 from Boston down into NH During World War I over 100 local men were drafted into service with various organizations including 95% serving overseas within 24 months including 3 who died while deployed aboard USS Pembroke (CV-18). Many residents supported their military brothers via food drives or selling items they produced at home . After World War I many factories closed but some like Gourley Paper Mills reopened that continued operations until 1984 . As late as 2007 all but two factories remained closed with ammonium nitrate producing ammonia plants continuing operates until 2006 while other businesses have since closed too such as engine manufacturer Morse Manufacturing Co & Service Inc.. However recently there has been some rebirth with two new restaurants opening up called One Plus One Sports Bar & Grill & Bluegrass Kitchen respectively just off Main Street .. [There has been] an increase in high tech firms moving into downtown especially given its proximity to MIT’s technology park ..[Many] people attribute this trend to increasing joblessness rates throughout New England due mainly to recent recession].
