It is the most populous town in Berkshire County and one of the five towns in Essex County. The name Haverhill comes from a small village on the branch of the Weymouth River that flows through its center. The first European to visit Haverhill was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1764, Haverhill became a part of the new Province of Massachusetts Bay with Boston as its capital. A fire destroyed much of downtown during the Great Fire of Boston on April 15th, 1868; however, Haverhill rebuilt quickly and by 1870 had returned to its pre-fire size. In 1907, Attorney General Charles Wickersham organized a drive to collect money for rural school construction projects throughout New England which led to the erection of many beautiful brick buildings around town including The First Congregational Church (now Holy Rosary Parish), located at 8 Beacon Street; Beechcroft School (now Beechcroft Academy); Elmira Female Seminary; and Mrs. Lewis's Well (now Elmira Historical Society). These early schools were all closed when World War II forced a large exodus of people from New England due to military service or rationing issues. However, many older buildings are still used today for local community meetings or other purposes such as Elmira High School's gymnasium where concerts are held every Saturday night during school hours; Stonington College's library where books are loaned out for free during term time; and Pembroke School District No.#2’s high school which opened in 1951 now known as Pembroke High School & Community Center which also has an amphitheater located adjacent to it on North Main Street within easy walking distance for students., However some residents have chosen not to participate in these recent trends by choosing instead to live close by while making their own lifestyle choices without having any involvement with either public or private institutions.,
