Haverhill is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway metropolitan area. Haverhill was first settled in 1630 by Puritans who had fled England after the English Civil War. The town was originally named "Plymouth" after the Plympton River, and later became known as "Haverhill". In 1827, Haverhill became a part of Norfolk County and changed its name to Plymouth. The town's most famous inhabitant is James Fenimore Cooper, author of "The Last of the Mohicans". The modern day community began as Congregationalist church on Main Street in 1795. A new church was built on Newbury Road in 1825 and replaced an earlier one which had been destroyed by fire. In 1828, Haverhill became an independent township within Plymouth County when it was organized as a result of a controversial referendum vote that allowed for township form within Plymouth County without approval from the county seat, Norwich. When Norfolk County disbanded in 1835, Haverill separated into two sections: Northside (later Knowlesboro) and Southside (later West Springfield). On July 1, 1870, when Rhode Island achieved statehood under the new Constitution of Rhode Island and Massachusetts General Court Act No. XI of 1870,[1] Haverhill joined what would become Providence County.[2] On August 15th 1898 - during World War I - there were mass arrests at Interlocken School (now Old Central School) due to rumors that Allied forces were planning to bomb the school; over 100 people were arrested including many women and children[3][4]. Most notably among those arrested were Florence Kelley who would go on to become nationally known as an American heroine during World War II.[5] In 1922-23 both towns voted to annex much surrounding farmland forming today's village center; this annexation caused some controversy because it meant reducing property values for those living near by while also increasing development pressures on already small townships.[6] In 1970-71 residents successfully petitioned for incorporation into Worcester – effective October 1971 – despite objections from neighboring communities fearing they would lose their own identity if they merged with Worcester;[7][8] this incorporation created mixed reviews because many felt that although they may have increased their taxes there wasn't enough differentiation between their services offered by both municipalities[9]. Over time annexed areas have returned back to their original municipality boundaries but population growth has caused more consolidation across municipal boundaries which can be seen especially in older parts of town such as Northside/West Springfield where properties are now valued predominately based upon potential housing developments rather than agricultural or commercial potential[10]. Today Haverhill is a thriving community full of culture and history with easy access to major cities like Boston or Worcester nearby yet still feeling isolated from larger urban centers due to its smaller size
