The name "Haverhill" is an anglicized form of "Hawkeye". The first settlement in what is now Haverhill was made by John Winthrop and his party on December 23, 1630. He named it after Holyoke (now Worcester) County in England because he had been there before and seen the great monastery there. When he returned to America in 1631, he took with him his nephew Thomas Tryon as his interpreter to explore what new land could be found hereabouts. Tryon founded a small town nearby called Woburn on April 6 of that year - but within a few weeks of its Establishment IT WAS TAKEN BY THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE IN A VICTORY OVER THOMAS TRYON AND HIS RELatives! In fact, Haverhill never regained its independence until 1793 when it became a part of Worcester County! In 1820 Haverhill had 1 store and 5 homes; it had 12 families and employed 35 men when it voted to secede from Worcester County! Two years later the population increased to 22 families and 50 men when Haverill voted to annex into Middlesex County! In 1828-29 Haverhill annexed into NorfolkCounty! Finally in 1836 it rejoined WorcesterCounty as part of the modernization process following the American Civil War!!! It has only grown slightly since then- with just 13 families living here during2010 Census- but this growth potential seems very real considering that today's community has 10 acres off main street which will soon house 3 more stores!!!!! And if all goes according to plan they may add even more retail space over time through various revitalization projects!! Currently there are plans for 4 additional housing units on top of an existing high school/library complex!!!! These are exciting times for our little town!!!!

Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Cambridge–Newton, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Haverhill began as a small Algonquin village on the banks of the Merrimack River in what is now Goffstown. In 1792 it became one of the towns in the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts and voted to remove from existence its predecessor town (Goffstown) because it felt that it had been too close to Boston. The first settler in Haverhill was John Winthrop who arrived here with his family in 1630. He started a small trading post near present-day Winchester and built a house there which he called "Winthrop's Fort." The Townspeople of Haverhill voted on October 10, 1792 to become one of three towns within the newly formed Commonwealth of Massachusetts and remove from existence its predecessor town Goffstown because they felt that Goffstown had become too close to Boston. In 1812 when Haverhill became an incorporated town it voted by referendum to annex Dedham since that town also claimed jurisdiction over parts of both Newburyport and Lexington Bayou. Haverhill is a town in the Province of Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Haverhill is located on the eastern edge of Northborough and Springfield counties, east of Worcester and west of Lynn. The first Europeans to visit Haverhill were two Dutchmen in 1635, who named it "Heverlee". A smallpox epidemic killed many people in 1638, so Haverhill replaced Heverlee with "Haverhill" because it was thought to be less infected. The first permanent settler was Samuel Adams in 1640. In 1795, John Adams founded an academy here for young men called "Adams Academy" which still exists today as Wellesley College. In 1817, there were twelve churches in Haverhill with a total population of 2,370; by 1840 there were twenty-one churches with a total population of 10,924 (including one Unitarian). There was also an agricultural society that raised prices for goods on credit from local farmers then sold these goods back at increased prices to merchants across the pond. This system continued until around 1870 when farmers began marketing their produce directly to consumers rather than through middlemen like traders or banks. During World War II Japanese bombers bombed parts of town killing more than fifty people; most notably one woman who died after being hit by shrapnel from her house during the bombing raid on December 5th 1945. Haverhill has seen growth over the years including its annexation into Northborough County in 1960 and annexation into Springfield County in 2002 creating a combined population size of 21,411 as of2010
