The town is located on the north shore of Long Island Sound and is bordered by the towns of West Islip to its east and Hempstead to its west. Haverhill's downtown area is home to many local businesses and public institutions such as the New England Aquarium and Haverhill High School. The Town of Haverhill was first settled in 1638 by Puritan settlers from England who named their new town after the beautiful village in Hampshire County, England where they had been living before moving to America. It was not until 1713 that the name "Haverhill" began being used for an entire township although part of it had been given as gifts by various proprietors of areas now within Suffolk County including Ipswich (nowEast Hampton), Southampton, Plainview, Brooksville and Weston. In 1729-30 Samuel Phelps donated land on which stands what is now the town's first courthouse building (now known as Fairfield Place). A year later he also donated a large lot near present day Main Street for a schoolhouse which served both the Township and parts of neighboring townships until 1802 when it burned down. In 1801-02 James Fenton purchased separately from Phelps land adjoining what is today Middle Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue in what became known as North Haverhill Village; this parcel included much of present day South Haverill Village with only a few small parcels remaining inside present day Town limits (the largest being just south of First Ave.). In 1840 John Windus bought another piece from Fenton which included most or all of present day East Haverill Village. By 1850 there were over 100 residents living in North Haverill Village together with 2 taverns/grainshops/fairschools/laundry stores etc., 4 churches (2 Congregationalist – oneMethodist - one Presbyterian) 3 schools (Northampton Female Academy & High School; Webster Grammar School; Colchester Female College); 1 post office(1851) & 1 court house(1853). There were also 2 private roads called "The Turnpike" running through village boundaries: these ran parallel along First Avenue just east ofpresentday Middle Street before turning northwest towards Putnam Valley while Third Avenue continued northeast into modern day South Haverill Village. On April 15th 1861 during American Civil War hostilities erupted between Union forces loyal to Abraham Lincoln while Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked early morning from atop hills overlooking Yankee positions around Lexington Park across Long Island Sound resulting in more than 50 deaths plus 400+ casualties including 5 officers killed & 20 wounded—a bloodbath proportions never seen again on mainland America up until then! The carnage continues unabated even though Union forces eventually prevail militarily becoming victorious two months later when General Lee arrives at Yorktown Battlefield losing only 6 men total outnumbering Confederate losses by nearly 3 times! Queen Victoria bestowed upon President Ulysses S Grant an honorary silver medal for his victory following his visit to Yorktown battlefield!! For her part Mrs Lincoln presented him with a gold apple! This event marks one half century since those fateful days On Friday April 15th 1861 in Suffolk County MA!!!!!
