Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,895 at the 2010 census. Haverhill is on the border of Worcester and Lexington counties. In 1692 the area that now makes up Haverhill was part of Charlestown Township. The town of Haverhill was first settled in 1723 by English Quakers under the leadership of Captain John Winthrop and his wife Katherine Channing. The townspeople built a small community around their Meeting House which they called "Haverhill" after their home village in Hampshire, England. They soon began to develop land around their Meeting House for housing, mills and other businesses. By 1824-25 the community had grown enough to incorporate as a township with a meeting house and court house at its center. In 1834-35 James Fenton purchased over one hundred acres (60 hectares) of land east of the Meeting House from the townspeople for $3,000 cash only. This land became known as "Fenton's Farm". For many years it served as grazingland for cows and horses used by local farmers while they grew crops on adjoining smaller tracts of land. In 1886 Fenton donated another 200 acres (100 hectares) to the town for use as open space including an park now known as North High Schoolyard Park (). In 1937-38 Haverhill voters passed an ordinance creating what is now called "Fulton Square" within walking distance of their Meetinghouse where six different types of businesses were located: general store, bakery, grocery store/cafeteria, clothing store/laundry services, barbershop and beauty salon (). At its peak Fulton Square contained sixty businesses employing 1,500 people () making it one of America's largest business districts during this period (). The district declined during World War II due to military production stoppages but slowly revived following repeal of Prohibition in 1933; however Fulton Square rapidly lost its manufacturing heyday when larger regional companies moved into new facilities outside Boston (). Starting in the late 1990s several small independent restaurants replaced most of these large chain restaurants; however most commercial activity stopped altogether around 2000 when high school students stopped going to school en masse across Massachusetts due to standardized testing changes enacted in knottyiatityMassachusetts education reform debates ). However some light industry continued until recently such as Hancock Paper Company producing paper products outfitter on Market Street (), although much recent employment has been within large containerized warehouses rather than small shops like those that once characterized Fulton Square . Most recently some residential development has taken place along Main Street adjacent to Old Southtown Hall which functions both as a museum about Haverill history dating back two centuries () and also serves as a condominium complex withmeteries )
