Haverhill emerged as one of the larger towns in southeastern Massachusetts during the colonial period; by 1700 its population had topped 10,000 people and it contained five churches (including one built by Puritan missionaries). During much of the 19th century Haverhill was largely rural until huge investments began in transportation infrastructure such as streetcars and telegraph lines which transformed what had been primarily an agricultural community into one characterized by dynamically expanding businesses and high levels of social engagement among its residents – even whilemuchofthetownremained relatively affordable through its harsh winters: construction materials available during those years included sandstone quarried nearby or brought over on sailing ships salvaged from completion yards along the lower Delaware River estuary. During World War II many manufacturing jobs were created within munitions factories across Essex County thanks to wartime production shortages caused by allied bombing raids on major industrial centers in eastern Europe; however these factories closed shortly after hostilities ended due to market saturation rather than any fundamental engineering flaw with munitions products which allowed them to compete effectively against more established commercial enterprises outside of Essex County
