Haverhill, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,146 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Haverhill family's original home on the plain near Haverhill Center. The first people to live in what is now Haverhill were the Abenakis and Pequot Indians. They built their houses on high ground just east of where present-day downtown stands. In 17th century England, many Puritans arrived in this area looking for a new home after leaving Boston. Some of these colonists brought with them Indian slaves who helped build some of the early churches and homes in this vicinity. The townsite that would become known as Haverhill was first settled by English farmers around 1620 as part of an effort to drain marshy land along the South River which watered much of Plymouth County. By 1630 most residents had moved to other places including Northampton and Salem because those areas were more fertile than what they found hereabouts. In 1636 John Winthrop became one of four men chosen by Parliament to help lead negotiations leading up to independence from England for New Englanders (the others being Samuel Adams and Roger Williams). He left London for America aboard HMS "Plymouth" on July 12, 1636, only six weeks after King Charles I had been overthrown and his Monarchy restored in Britain via a military coup d'etat led by Oliver Cromwell. Winthrop landed at Plymouth Rock on October 10 with his party consisting mostly of Pilgrims: Increase Mather (president), Jabez Gadbury (bishop), Cotton Mather (a wealthy cloth manufacturer), Thomas Young (a lawyer) and several others including Nathaniel Hawthorne who would later write Nathaniel Poore's history about him when he lived in Haverhill during that time frame called "New England's First Gentleman."
