In 1814, when Haverhill had a population of 10,000 people, it became part of the new state of Massachusetts. Haverhill has been home to high school athletes since 1892 when West New England High School opened its doors as a co-educational girls institution. In 1960, boys also started attending Haverfield Senior High School. Today, there are over 100 students at Haverhill Senior High School including 27 who compete in varsity sports programs and 36 who compete in below-varsity sports programs Since its incorporation as a town on April 15th, 1784 under the name "Wellesley", there have been 137 mayors (town meetings) with only one exception: David Brewster served 1 term only due to illness during that year's mayoral election; his successor Abram Beresford filled that role for 2 years before taking office again during an special Town Meeting on May 14th which did not includeBrewster because he was then serving as Deputy Mayor for Public Works The current mayor is Jodi Rourke with term expiring on June 30th, 2020

Haverhill, Massachusetts, is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in New England and one of the few in the United States without a city charter. The first Europeans to visit Haverhill were fishermen looking for cod on what is now known as Martha's Vineyard. They called it "Nantucket". In 1635, John Winthrop and his group of Puritans arrived in what is now Haverhill from Ipswich and founded the new settlement there. First named Wintoonstown (now part of Lawrence), Haverhill was renamed after General Thomas Gage during the American Revolutionary War because General George Washington had been based at Ipswich. In 1786, when Dartmouth College moved to Northampton, it took with it much of its equipment and students overland to move into buildings on Church Hill Road (later State Street). When Dartmouth reopened in 1802 as Brown University under Governor Samuel Adams, many Haverhillians contributed money to help defray costs associated with moving and setting up shop anew on campus. Brown merged with Harvard University in 1836; Haverhill became an incorporated town within that larger community. The railroad reached town by 1860 but did not reach any homes until 1865 when a spur track was built leading north from Worcester to Stockbridge Junction where railroads crossed each other tracks coming southbound from Northampton/Boston via Worcester-Southborough-Worcester City/Brockton-Salem/Walpole-Haverill-. This line later became part of the Boston & Lowell Railroad which served as Amtrak's Northeast Corridor until 2003 when that service was discontinued due to budget cuts. In 1892–93 the first school building for boys opened at 211 Hopkinton Avenue after years of planning by Mrs Lyon who also donated land for building purposes; this structure burned down three years later while she was living on Green Dragon Lane near present day Depot Road (now Boylston Street) off High Street (). Over time other schools have followed suit including Girls' Christian School (1912), Holy Cross School (1920), Sacred Heart Catholic School(1944), St Joseph’s Academy(1950), Blessed Sacrament School Annex(1959), Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic girls’ school(1982) – all located adjacent to Hopkinton Avenue between Eliot Road and Depot Road today. Today most residents are employed within commuting distance by way of Worcester or Salem etc., although some continue farming operations along Route 9 east out of town towards Bourne or Groveland NH respectively
