The name of the town comes from two places: Haverhill (now part of Allston) and Haverhill Point on Cape Cod. The first place was named after a hill in England whence Englishmen took ship to visit those parts in 1620; and the second after a cape on that coast where they made their landing during the greatamphibious expedition against Narragansett Bay in 1624. The early settlers were Roger Williams and his band of Puritans who came here from Rhode Island in 1636-37 as refugees from King James II's war with France. The first school opened here on October 22, 1795 by Rev. Drury Lane Lewis with twenty pupils. In 1812-13 there were ninety-six students attending one day school out of four public schools open for instruction then existing in this small community; but it must be remembered that parental investment was very low among this earliest generation; “the real education” being received at home or through private tutors or reading lessons with friends or family members—all without formalized institutions such as academies or high schools which had been established since colonial times throughout New England to provide educational opportunities for young people of all social backgrounds and economic levels.—(from "Haverhill: A History" by Judith Ivey) Schools became more common starting in the 1830s when improvements were made to transportation links between North America and Europe via sea routes, making it possible for more people to attend college rather than laboriously journey downstate every year or so. Roads appeared almost immediately – what would have been an easy trip down Route 9 now takes approximately eight hours by car! "In 1812-13 there were ninety-six students attending one day school out of four public schools open for instruction then existing in this small community; but it must be remembered that parental investment was very low among this earliest generation;" (Ivey) This lack of parental investment did not stop educators from trying though - many families provided their children with books and snacks while they attended school so that even complete beginners could learn something! In fact, some residents still continue this tradition up until present day! One can still purchase books and snacks during lunchtime at most local stores! Haverhill is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled by English colonists in 1636 as Haverhill Plantation on the border of modern-day Hampshire and Newbury counties. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "hitherto unknown." A smallpox epidemic in 1765 killed many of the original settlers, including many of Haverhill's prominent citizens such as John Winthrop and Increase Mather. After a period of reconstruction following the American Revolution, Haverhill began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location on Route 128 and its natural resources such as coal and lead. In 1827, it became incorporated as a village with a population of 584 people. During World War II, most residents worked in munitions factories located near Boston or Hartford Connecticut; however, some did join the military for service in Europe or Japan (most notably Sergeant Edward Joffe). Afterward, many returned to their homes and businesses while others continued to live and work in Haverhill until recently when suburban development expanding into rural areas outpaced what housing could be built within limits set by zoning regulations
