The earliest evidence for habitation in what is now Haverhill dates to 9500 BC. The first Europeans to visit were the Mayflower Compact party which landed in Plymouth Harbor on April 6, 1620. They brought with them Indian captives and diseases that wiped out many of their crew. By 1700, some local settlers had started clearing land and building homes around a small creek that ran through town. In 1812, a group of men led by Captain John Walton founded the village of Walpole on land donated by Sir Walter Scott. After only five years it was abandoned due to too much flooding from nearby Amos Pond and re-established as Haverhill under new leadership in 1818. In 1822, Congress created Hampshire County from parts of Middlesex and Suffolk counties; Haverhill was one of several towns within its boundaries. However, because Haverhill lacked an elected sheriff or other countywide responsibilities, its status as a town continued until 1830 when it became an incorporated village under the same name with responsibility for water supply, firefighting and other community services。 In 1870–71 more than half of all acreage within present day Hampshire County was dedicated to agricultural production; however this changed rapidly following New England's notorious Great Famine (1846–49) when prices for food fell so low that many farmers abandoned their fields altogether or went bankrupt). In 1892 when other universities merged into Johns Hopkins University (now known as Bloomberg School of Public Health), Easton became one among their constituent colleges which included Amherst College (now Amherst Univeristy) along with Yale University and Princeton University/New Jersey Institute School Of Mines And Metallurgy - all within one large campus called "Johns Hopkins Univ." During World War II much activity took place at nearby Fort Devens due to production at Glidden munitions plant; however no damage or loss took place to either town resultant from that war effort.
