Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is from the English word "Glebe", meaning "plain." The first permanent European settlement in what is now Gloucester was made on December 15, 1620 by Captain John Smith and his crew who were sailing for England on their way to find a new landmass to map. They named their new land "NewEngland" after the then-new country of England. At that time, most people living in New England were Indians and there wasn't yet any connection between India and America. In 1764, William Dawes Purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land east of present-day Gloucestertown Road from the Pequot tribe under an agreement known as Treaty of Piscataqua. This purchase allowed for development of what would become Worcester County and it became one of the original counties in Massachusetts. During its early years as a part of Worcester County, much effort went into developing agriculture due to its location close to major rivers and major roads. Today's economy reflects this history with various industries such as engineering, plastics manufacturing and healthcare companies employing many local workers throughout the county today. In 1837, when Worcester County merged with Middlesex County to form Massachusetts Bay Colony government, Gloucester became one of its first towns within Boston proper; it remained an incorporated town until 1978 when it separated from Boston again becoming an unincorporated community once more. In 1868–69 construction began on what would become downtown Gloucester which included both old millrace (now Riverwalk) Beach Road and modern buildings such as the First Baptist Church & Convention Hall which opened in 1969 followed by other businesses including a movie theater (the Globe), general store (now Macy's), post office (1893), bank (1910), among others over time making this district one ofgloucester's most vibrant communities during that era. A large renovation project conducted in 2006–2008 restored all historic brick structures within downtownGloucester including several churches which had been closed or damaged over time including St Patrick’s Cathedral which reopened in 2009 following extensive restoration work costing $27 million dollars plus 3 million dollars raised through public donations
The first European to settle in Gloucester was the Dutch in 1629. The town rapidly grew and by 1775, it had a population of over 100 people. The town was named for the English county of Gloucestershire, which at that time included much of present-day Massachusetts. In 1814, Gloucester became part of the United States as a result of the First Barbary War. The town's growth continued during the 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived from Europe. In 1881, Gloucester passed an ordinance establishing a public library system. In 1955, the town voted to become an independent city and it now has a population of around 50 people.
