Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,723 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of Hampshire County and is part of the Worcester–Gloucester metropolitan area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1638. Gloucester was incorporated as a town on April 5, 1872. The town has since grown to include the neighboring towns of Acton and Wellesley and parts of Leicester and Westborough Township in Middlesex County. The name "Gloucester" comes from the word "gleowe," meaning "a place where wheat is planted." In 1638, one John Glocester came overland from England with his family and began to farm land near what is now Northampton Avenue in Gloucester. He named his new home 'Gleowe.' Over time, other settlers followed Glocester's lead and started to settle around Gleowe. By 1768, there were about 50 people living in Gleowe. In 1872, when Gloucester became an American city through annexation by Worcester, it lost its independent status as a town due to ordinance changes made by Worcester City Hall which favored cities over villages according to their size or population density. However, because of its location within the larger Worcester-Gloucester metropolitan area – which had increased in population during the late 1800s – Gloucester continued to experience high levels of economic growth throughout most of the 20th century; despite this increase in development it retains much of its rural character today with many farms still visible throughout downtown areas . In recent years however some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with how their community has evolved both physically (namely gentrification) and politically (the lack of meaningful representation from local government).

The English settlers who founded Gloucester in 1630 were Quakers, and their religious beliefs influenced the town's early history. In 1798, during the French & Indian War, British troops burned down the Meeting House in Gloucester as part of an effort to drive out Native Americans from the region. The town's first permanent home was a small structure on what is now Main Street. The first school in Gloucester was built on School Street in 1799; it served as a day-school for children of farmers and other local residents. A second school building was constructed on State Road (now Route 128) around 1810; it also served as a day-school for students from nearby towns and villages. The construction of these schools helped to create a strong community spirit among its residents and contributed to Gloucester's reputation as one of America's "small towns." The first real growth occurred during the late 19th century, when many new Methodists arrived in Gloucester after migrating from North Carolina and Tennessee. This new congregation helped to transform the town into an agricultural center with significant livestock farming activity. In 1915, when World War I began, many men from within Gloucester left their homes to fight on either side of the war; this resulted in a large influx of refugees into the town over time. As a result of this migration, many businessesowners lost their jobs and had to take out loans to keep their businesses afloat; this event has been referred to as "the Great Glocester Shift". After World War II ended, much economic stability returned to Gloucester thanks largely to two factors: an increase in tourism which led to increased income for local businesses and an increasing number of people coming back into the city after having fled various wars or persecution overseas
The town of Gloucester was founded in 1630 by Sir Ferdinando Gorges, a member of the Massachusetts Company. The first settler in Gloucester was John Glover. The town grew rapidly, and by 1775 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1835, the town became part of Worcester County.
