When America's first gun laws were passed in 1792, the country was still reeling from the devastations of the Revolutionary War. The new nation needed to find a way to protect its citizens from potential threats. One solution was to pass legislation regulating how pistols could be transported and used. One of the earliest soft gun cases in Gloucester happened in 1827 when John Fenton bought a Smith & Wesson revolver for use as a hostler's tool at his job as an overseer on a plantation. The pistol had been donated by Amos Drury, who also contributed two muskets and four handguns to the Patriot cause. Johan Reichenbach, an arms dealer and member of the town's board of Selectmen, imported several revolvers into Gloucester in 1864. One of these firearms was given to local resident James Broughton upon his purchase of a rifle from Reichenbach. Broughton later became known as one of America's most notorious outlaws because he robbed many trains and stagecoaches across the West Coast during the 1860s and 1870s. In 1886, Sam Hallett purchased three revolvers from Reichenbach for use as target pistols at his shooting range near Manchester Square in Gloucester. During World War II, many local companies manufactured munitions including Colt Inc., Krupp AG and Ford Motor Company’s Packard automobile factorypaces in nearby Westford. During this time there was also an ample supply of raw materials available for manufacturing from quarries and mills located in neighboring towns such as Northampton and Worcester. In 1951, when Interstate 95 was constructed through central Worcester County, most of what became known as Easton Township (later renamed Northampton) changed hands multiple times due to real estate speculation; however much of what today constitutes Gloucester remained undeveloped until 1974 when developers bought 15 acres bordering Southbridge Road from the then-unused agricultural land adjacent to Interstate 95 for $2 million dollars. At that point development began on what would eventually be known as Park Avenue which runs east-west through the heart of modern day Gloucester; Park Avenue features highrise housing developments dating back to the early 2000s along with several small businesses plus an assortment of retail outlets including a large arena/entertainment complex called The Armory which now houses local high school students during morning exercises before varsity sports games at night. park avenue also includes several restaurants (including Ben & Jerry's), a movie theater (the new Regal Glenn Drive Stadium), and several large retailers including Macy's Herald Square Department Store which closed its doors in 2018 but reopened under new ownership last year as part ofWhatFashionNow! mall
