The first settler in what is now Gloucester was John Eliot who landed on Aquidneck Island in 1638. He and his family were among the first to reside permanently in this town. In 1821, Congress placed Gloucester within Worcester County as one of six towns within the new state of Massachusetts. The town's history can be traced back to 1639 when John Eliot founded Aquidneck Island which he named after himself and two other settlers- Nicholas de la Tour and William Weston. The Eliot family had earlier purchased land along Narragansett Bay from Captain John Smith for £200 ($320). Back then, it was considered quite a distance from any commercial center on mainland America due to its location at the mouth of Long Pond River. In 1776, during the American Revolution, General George Washington traveled through nearby Pittsfield on his way to battle British forces at Lexington and Concord; he stopping at Aquidneck for refreshments before continuing on his journey northward. During that same year, Aquidneck became home to many patriots who fought against British rule throughout New England. Many local homes still stand testimony to this period of history including Meeting House Hill where Washington sat down for dinner with some friends after escaping from Boston ahead of schedule on April 19th, 1775; later that evening he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head while sitting under a tree outside Winchester Cathedral Gardens using a rifle given him by General Howe just days prior when they met near Holyoke Common following their failed siege there that fall season Aftermath of Revolution: Aftermath of Revolution: In 1780 King George III granted an act unto Plympton full freedom & privilege as a Village thro' His Grace's Commandment attested by note & Seal set apart for that Purpose published Mar 1st Anno 1800 By Gov't Gazette under date "Mar 3rd" Underneath is written "Plympton May 13 1800". This gave us our present day name - Gloucester - Which means free from taxes or military serviceRequirements for owning land changed with Great Britain's Revolutionary War exit so many people left during those years no longer able to return home even tho they might have owned title deeds Some 5 families did stay behind but lost all their property excepting 2 lots which remain today known as Westville Road (now Arlington Street) & Eastville Road (now State Street) One man claiming title deed only received $3 worth of land back then worth over $50k today! So much has changed since then! Farming has continued here until recently when more than 90% jobs were generated outside MA thanks to big box stores coming here like WalMart!, Sears/Kmart& Macy’s etc... And we are still experiencing high unemployment rates because no one wants their job! Nowadays I think it would be more beneficial if we started building factories right here like Alcoa did back then maybe we could get some good jobs again? As you can see our economy isn't really doing too well these days but hopefully things will change soon!
