Gloucester is one of the most affluent towns in New England and has a rich history dating back to 17th century Puritan settlers. The current incarnation of Gloucester began to form around 1820 when it became part of Boston Township. In 1835, it became separate from Boston Township and took its name from its founder, Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1865, it merged into Boston County and remains one of its constituent towns today. Gloucester is located on Fenway Park which is home to the Red Sox baseball team as well as other sports teams such as soccer, track and field, ice hockey, boxing, wrestling and lacrosse. Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The towns of Easthampton and Woburn are also in Plymouth County. It is part of the Boston-Newton-Framingham, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Gloucester were French and English Protestants who arrived during the 1600s. In 1624, General John Winthrop led an expedition to found the new colony of Massachusetts Bay on Cape Cod; however, only three people - John Winthrop himself, his brother Edward Winslow and their friend and compatriot David Dudley Warren - survived the journey back to England with their ship "Mayflower". During King George's War (1745-1748), Gloucester sided with Great Britain against France. On November 11th, 1747, British Major General Thomas Gage sent a detachment of about 50 men under Colonel Samuel Adams to torch all but one house in Gloucester because its owner had not paid taxes for two years. Aftermath: There were no more Continental Patriots in Gloucester after this event! One of the most famous residents of early Gloucester was Nathaniel Hawthorne who was born there on December 2nd 1837 into a family that had long been active in religious services at Shoaford Meeting House (now known as First Congregational Church). Hawthorne became wellknown for writing many poems and short stories including "The Marble Faun" (1851) and "The Raven" (1865). He died at home on July 6th 1902 after a long life full of accomplishment both within America and abroad
The town of Gloucester, Massachusetts was founded in 1630 by the Pilgrims. It was first called Dorchester because it was the site of a Hindu temple. The town became a part of Boston in 1703. In 1801, Gloucester became a part of the United States and was renamed Worcester.
