Gloucester is a town in New England, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gloucester were the French in 1603 and 1604 who named it "Glebe" after their ship "Le Guevre". The English claimed the land in 1644 as part of the Treaty of Nemours which ended the civil war between England and France. The town was platted on November 15, 1784 by Colonel George Winthrop with land from Meshechusetts bay on one side and from Charlestown harbor on the other side. On July 1, 1836, Gloucester became a city when its citizens voted to secede from Worcester County which at that time included all of modern-day Massachusetts except for eight towns in western Worcester County: Acton, Arlington Heights, Bedford Falls, Brookline (Brookline Village), Dalton Heights (Dalton Hill), Framingham (Framingham Township), Northborough (Northborough Village), Peabody (Peabody Hills) and Southborough (Southborough Township). In 1899–1900 a severe storm destroyed much of downtown Gloucester during an ice storm; this event has been called "the worst natural disaster ever visited upon any community in New England". However damage done to homes and businesses was only $450 total out of a total value of over $10 million caused by weather events that year across New England. On September 25th 1907 two planes collided over Boston after takeoff from Logan Airport causing both planes to go down into abdomenzero water conditions just outside Quincy Market bringing aboutNow known as 'The Gloriously Unfortunate Gloriette Incident'. One passenger died and most people onboard were injured including future U.S Senator Edward Munch who was travelling with his friends James Condon and Haddon Chapin also survived but lost an eye due to frostbite later that night while working at Mr O'Neill's restaurant near Beantown Square. This incident led finally Congress passing Section 333a(b) FAA regulations designed to prevent such accidents by outlawing low flying within 50 miles or so of airports without prior notice or authorization from airport management notifying passengers via radio communications systems

Gloucester became a state capital in 1851 and served as the seat of government for most of the state until 1888 when Boston became the state capital. In 1912 Gloucester was renamed Springfield.
