Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,948 at the 2010 census. Gloucester was platted on October 3, 1792 by Jabez Putnam and others as part of the Town of Worcester. It became a borough on April 15, 1867. The present-day town was first settled in the late 17th century by English people who arrived from England and Wales to seek new land opportunities in what is now New England. They set up small villages along the Narragansett Bay coastline until they came into conflict with Native Americans over land titles and trade goods. In 1692, English settlers led by Captain John Smith founded Providence Plantations on Rhode Island's most eastern coast; this settlement attracted more English colonists who began arriving hereabouts in search of new land to settle. By 1700 there were more than 100 white settler families living in Gloucestertown (now part of Worcester). The early growth of the community was due to its strategic location: close to both Providence and Boston—the two largest cities in New England at that time—and its easy access to transportation including railsroads and boats that transported goods between these two large metropolitan areas. This proximity also enabled Gloucester to become an important center for shippington production; lead ore from mines near Pawtucket had been shipped downriver from Salem via Gloucester City until it reached Boston marketplaces where it was sold off as lead paint or other products before being exported back upriver again. During much of its history, Gloucester served as one of three towns located within Interstate 95 (I-95) which connectedBoston with northern New England through Connecticut and Rhode Island.
