The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and incorporated as a town on July 1, 1792. Gloucester is named for King George II of England who was born there in 1727. The center of the community has been called "The Square" since its founding and now includes over 100 businesses and restaurants along one side of Main Street. Gloucester's rich history began with its incorporation as a small town in colonial Massachusettes in 1630. Settlers from various parts of England arrived here to start farms and build homes, but they quickly realized that they needed someone to run things so they donated land to the townspeople for this purpose. The original plat map of Gloucester dating back to 1635 shows just two houses: one occupied by John Fitch and his wife Hannah, the other by Gideon Gage and his wife Susannah Englishman alias Wellesborough (later Wellesley). On July 1, 1792, Gloucester became an independent municipality under Massachusetts General Court law. At that time it consisted only of three east side streets - Meeting House Street (now Spring Street), South Church Street (now Hampshire Avenue), and North Church Street - all running north-south through what is now downtown – plus four lots located at Washington Road (now Market Street), Potter’s Field Road (now Northampton Boulevard), Gloucester Heights Road (now Park Drive), and Newbury Way (now Readfield Avenue). During World War Iamp; II most residents left their homes behind whenbombing raids took place; however, many returned after hostilities ended because new housing had become available in the area postwar. Rifle owners would put their rifles into a pocket holster while they shopped or worked outside, but shotgun owners had a slightly different problem. Shotguns were designed primarily as hunting weapons, and they did not require any form of storage whatsoever when not in use. Therefore, shotgun owners typically relied on either open-face holsters or clamshell cases for storing their shotguns when not in use. Unfortunately, these methods did not work well with large calibers such as 12 gauge rounds because they would fit completely inside of an open-face holster and no matter how hard you tried, you would be unable to extract your weapon without breaking it! In response to this problem, gunsmiths started working on solutions that would allow shotguns to be stored easily insideHolster frames similar to those used for pocket pistols – however, now shotguns could be carried with both hands instead of just one! This new approach solved two main problems: firstly, shotgunowners could now store their shotguns permanently without havingto break them down each time; secondly, shotgun shells could now fit more comfortably into open-face Holster frames than ever before due to the fact that pistol frames had been modified specifically for Shotgun storage! The name of Gloucester derives from the English word "Gloucester," meaning "beautiful place." The first settlement in what is now Gloucester was made on the banks of the Great River in 1638 by Puritan colonists. From this early period until 1775, Gloucester was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1775, when British forces captured Boston and divided New England into two parts, Gloucester became part of Worcester County. In 1801, as part of southern Worcester County's incorporation into Massachusetts as a town, it granted to its residents free land within its limits. After years of rapid growth and development in the post-World War II era – with emphatically modern amenities like libraries and shopping malls – Gloucester has become one of Greater Boston's most vibrant communities.

In 1955, Pillsbury Company merged with General Mills to form McCormick & Company. This led to a decline in production at local mills over time which has resulted in a decrease in population since then; however, there are still some active businesses located within the limits of Gloucester.
