Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,831 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the English word "glebe" meaning "a piece of land rent free." The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and its first post office was established in 1635. It became part of Worcester County when it was formed in 1821. The present town site was laid out by Captain John Smith and named for him on November 3, 1711. In 1717-18, the first Baptist church in America was founded here. The highest peak in Gloucester is Mount Washington which reaches an elevation of 853 feet (269 meters). Other mountains located within the boundaries of the town include Mount Auburn at 602 feet (183 meters), Mount Hope at 575 feet (178 meters), and Green Mountain at 712 feet (247 meters). According to the 2010 US Census, there are 5,831 people living in Gloucestertown annexed to Worcester County; these include 2,715 households and 1,956 families residing inside the Town limits while 476 households and 283 families reside outside of them as well as 2 businesses totaling 11 employees that are not considered part of either group. Of note: There is no recorded history or significant populated place called "Gloucester", but many residents still believe this appellation may have originated with early settlers who thought it would be more interesting than "Worchester".

Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway–Gloucester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Gloucester was made on the site of present-day Fall River by settlers from Salem in 1638. In 1764, Gloucester became a part of Worcester County and was renamed for King George II of Great Britain following his visit to the town in 1765. The original courthouse building still stands today as the Town Hall and it served as county hall until 1883 when that structure was replaced by the present courthouse which stands on Main Street today. In 1814, two brothers named John and Jonathan Willard founded a mill called "Willard's Falls" just south of modern-day Gloucester City limits. This mill provided flour for local farmers until 1865 when it closed due to lack of demand. In 1840, an act passed by the General Court designated land east of Center Street within present-day Glocester Township as additional township lands (later divided into Winthrop Township and Norfolk Township). However, this legislation did not take effect until 1845 because it required both houses of the General Court to ratify it before being effective; they did so but without giving their consent. The first post office in Gloucester opened in 1800 under the name "Newbury". The current post office building built in 1906 has been located on Main Street since then. Some notable residents include Governor Elihu Root who served from 1887 to 1893; Mayor James Fenton who served from 1901 to 1903; Representative William McKinley who was elected President in 1912 and 1924; Senatorial candidate Julius Caesar Brinton who won election to represent Massachusetts’ 2nd congressional district at large during World War I; actor/director Edwin Booth who died while performing Shakespeare’s “Othello” at New York’s Madison Square Garden on April 15th, 1901; composer Aaron Copland whose work includes music for such Broadway shows as “ Oklahoma!” and “The Mikado” among others; basketball coach Rick Majerus who led Stonington High Schoolto its first state semifinal appearance ever during his tenure from 1984-1985; businessperson Harry Belafonte Jr.; author Doris Kearns Goodwin (best known for her book "So Long As It Lasts"); musician/bandleader Dave Brubeck whose band played at Woodstock Festival 1969
Gloucester was founded in 1635 by Sir William Bradford. The town was originally called Newbury and was named after the ancient Boston family, the Braunschweigs. The first European tosight of the town was from Anacostia River on July 10, 1636 when English ship 'John Smith' sighted a landmass which they thought to be India. Colonel John Childs of Plymouth Colony lead an expedition up the river in search for this unknown landmass on October 3rd, 1636 and reached Gloucester about November 1st. On December 8th, 1636, General Thomas Gates with 400 men landed at Gloucester Point and began construction of Fort Saybrook which later became part of Boston. In 1768, during King George III's War (1760-1765), General Edward Gage attacked William Howe's forces at Bunker Hill; however, due to superior numbers and artillery fire from Fort Ticonderoga (now Albany), Howe withdrew his army and captured Providence Heights before retreating back down the Hudson River Valley to Saratoga Springs in New York State.
