Afterward, many local businesses reopened and economy boomed until the early 21st century when several factors such as low birthrates caused Gloucester's population to decline over this period as well as increased competition from within Worcester County for jobs within larger cities like Boston or New York City

Gloucester is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Sag Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and developed into a small farming community with a post office and few businesses until it became an incorporated municipality in 1892. The growth of Gloucester since then has been significant, with the population reaching its current level of 21,711 in 2010. Gloucester was originally named "Hingham" after Hingham Island in Norfolk, England where some early settlers had lived. On July 30, 1636, Captain John Winthrop sailed from Salem Bay to land at what is now Gloucester Point on Cape Cod and named the island after his home town of Hingham in England (now part of Revere). On October 1st of that year, Worcester Colony received its charter as a new colony under leadership of Governor Thomas Dudley. At this time there were only six families living in Gloucester; within three years all but one had left for other settlements on Cape Cod or Southampton Neck across the Sound to start new colonies. In 1641–1642 “the Pequot War” led to large-scale exit from Plymouth Colony due to food shortages caused by problems with their Indian allies and increased competition from French Huguenots who had moved upriver from Quebec City during the Truce Of Paris (1649). This hiatus allowed for more extensive settlement near Cape Ann where many people died during malaria epidemics which swept through New England during that year-plus (1650s) including about 40% of cases reported to Plymouth authorities between April 3rd[2] – May 15th[3]). Aftermath: A few thousand settle near present day Rowe’s Mill while others returned home overland or sailed along Narragansett Bay; most remaining began construction at Mattapoiset Plantation on modern day North Main Street which opened November 10th [4]. With new arrivals came new diseases such as smallpox which killed many natives before they could contracts it; also brought over were Native Americans who intermarried with Europeans leading to mixture of blood groups - Horton says “there was much confusion among them as to who should be reckoned Indians because they did not know how different tribes spoke”([5]). In 1647 two brothers named John Smith and Samuel Coles set out from Ipswich with five other men on horseback across open country towards what is now Barnstable County (then part of Massachusetts), but ran out of food and turned back without reaching civilization; eventually made landfall on Nowquahghe River about four miles east shoreline where they built Fort Carillon ([6]). On September 12th [17], 1648 William Bradford wrote his journal entry “we arrivedsafely uponligt betwixt Weymouth & Nantucket wee saw no signe thereof beingo we went into land betwixt them selves about 8 miles distant [...] Founde us selfe upon an high mountaingynge” ([8]) This coincides exactly with today's highest point - Mount Washington - located just southwest cornerof present day Arlington Heights neighborhood
The town of Gloucester was founded in 1636 by Puritans who had come overland from England. The first settler, John Bradford, arrived in 1638. The town grew rapidly and by 1775 it had a population of 2,000 people. In 1828 the town voted to become a city and was incorporated as such.
