The town is named for John Woolridge, 1st Viscount Northumberland and 3rd Baronet of Newcastle-under-Lyme. The first Europeans to come to Gloucester were the Pilgrims in 1623. The town began as a small settlement on the banks of the river Charles River where they built their first house in 1627. In 1768, a group of men from Plymouth Colony founded what would become Gloucester and its neighbor New Bedford (now Fall River). In 1825, General James K. Polk established Fort Point on Duke's Island in what is now downtown Gloucester to protect shipping lanes between Boston and New York City during the construction of that city's Central Bridge. Fort Point became known as "the Floating Fort" because it floated on channels above the river bottom until it was moved to its current location about two miles upstream in 1855. In 1865, when Worcester County was created from parts of Middlesex County and Hampshire County, Gloucester became one of its seven townships. In 1777, during the American Revolution, General John Dunbar attacked Lord Cornwallis' forces at battle on Cape Ann but was repulsed with heavy losses by British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Adams (1702-1775). Cornwallis retreated to Cambridge where he ordered his men to burn down all buildings within three miles (5 kilometers) of Ipswich before withdrawing back into New England. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of Boston's downtown area.
