The town was first settled in 1736 by Increase Mather and his family on the site of present-day Gloucester. In 1803, it became the capital of Massachusetts. After its move to Boston in 1898, Gloucester declined slowly until the economic recession of 2008 caused a sharp uptick in development activity that has seen recent growth include new jobs and businesses in both education and health care sectors. One local landmark is the historic Fort George after which King's Meeting House stood before being destroyed by fire in 1854. The fortifications were replaced by an ice cream parlor built by entrepreneur Harry Shepley beginning in 1906 as one of severalITE tourist attractions dotting Route 9 around town during this time period; however, attempts to keep it running failed and it closed down about 15 years later due to financial difficulties. Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Somerville, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been occupied by humans since at least 9500 BC according to archeological evidence. The first Europeans to come through Gloucester were the Pilgrims in 1620 and they built a small trading post on what is now Park Street. In 1736, George Washington visited Gloucester and recognized its potential as an important port for British goods entering America through Cape Cod. The town began to grow rapidly after 1800 when people started coming from eastern Massachusetts to work on farms and in shipbuilding yards along the harbor. By 1825, there were over 100 houses and businesses in the town center with a population of 1,000+. In 1875, Gloucester became one of the towns within Worcester County when it was organized as a result of an act of the General Court of Worcester County. At this time, it had a population of 553 residents and was about halfway between Boston and Providence (the two largest cities within New England at that time). On July 15th, 1907, during World War I,[1] Gloucester was bombed by German forces from submarines while lying off Cape Cod; all but five buildings were destroyed and most likely due to incendiary bombs which left many local businesses unlivable for months afterwards.[2] Gloucester reached its peak during World War II with an estimated pre-war population of 10,000 residents; however only 602 individuals lived in the incorporated town limits[3]. During World War II much development took place within newly annexed neighborhoods such as Fall River – which would later become Quincy – because these areas were considered strategic resources like airfields or manufacturing plants being used by both Allied and Axis powers alike. In 1957–58 Mayor John Fenton ordered construction of Race Hill Elementary School which replaced three dilapidated schools that served primarily African American students.[4] This school quickly became known as “The House on Muddy Creek” because many black families who had originally moved into textiles or other agricultural activities near Race Hill now reside thereabouts because White mobs burned down their homes during protest against integration policies adopted by Fenton’s predecessor four years earlier[5]. After years of protests culminating with more than seventy arrests resulting from peaceful civil disobedience against city hall orders,[6],Fenton announced his intention toDeveloper plans for Race Hill without community input doomed any hope for reversal until finally he resigned amidst public outcry following November 4th rioting in downtown Glorchester[7]. Despite this clear victory for neighborhood activists over developers,[8], race continues play an important role in Community Relations today with tensions still running high despite concerted efforts by elected officials [9][10].
