A post office was established at Gloucester on November 12, 1798 under the name Northampton; it changed to Northfield on December 1, 1800 and to Glocester on December 2, 1800. On February 14th (or 20th) 1801 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote to his friend John Jay that he had just moved into his new home which he describes as "a pretty little cottage some distance from your old white dwelling".
